Tile Setters Job Description

A Tile Setter must position and press or taps tile with trowel handle to affix tile to plaster or adhesive base.

Primary Objective of a Tile Setter:

  • The Tile Setter is concerned with measurements that will help him to accurately place tile in the right position.
  • The Tile Setter must mark the surfaces to be tiled and lay out work, following blueprints in order to make sure the project is completed properly.
  • The Tile Setter knows that he must be capable of spreading plaster or concrete over surfaces to form tile base making sure that it is leveled to the specified thickness.

Most of the time a Tile Setter is able to cut the back of a tile to required size using shears and then they spread plaster or concrete over the surface to form the base and levels to specified thickness, using brush, trowel and screed. A Tile Setter spreads mastic or other adhesive base on roof deck to form base for promenade tile, using serrated spreaders. In this type of tiling the Tile Setter cuts and shapes tile, using tile cutters and biters. The Tile Setter often selects tile and other items to be installed, such as bathroom accessories, walls, panels and cabinets, according to specifications. The Tile Setter knows that he can measure and cut metal lath to size for walls and ceilings, using snips.

The Tile Setter tacks lath to wall and ceiling surfaces, using staple gun or hammer. The Tile Setter then wipes grout between tiles and removes excess, using wet sponges. The Tile Setter mixes and applies mortar or cement to edges and ends o drain tiles to seal halves and joints. Then the Tile Setter brushes glue onto Manila paper on which design has been drawn and positions tile’s finished side down onto paper. The Tile Setter installs and anchors fixtures in designated positions, using hand tools.

The Tile Setter must have the following knowledge about his work:

  • Tile Setter needs knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of numbers, their operations and interrelationships including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, use benefits, repair and maintenance.
  • The Tile Setter knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, and applications including air, water, material dynamics, light, atomic principles, heat, electric theory, earth formations and meteorological and related natural phenomena is a must.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of the composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to product motion, light, power and technology, and other applications.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. He must also have knowledge of media production, communication, dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of various methods for describing the location and distribution of land, sea and air masses including their physical locations, relationships and characteristics.
  • The Tile Setter needs knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
  • The Tile Setter needs knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing systems, filing and records management systems, stenography and transcription, forms design principles and other office procedures and terminology.
  • The Tile Setter needs knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • The Tile Setter must have knowledge of principles and methods involved in showing, promoting and selling products or services. This includes marketing strategies and tactics, product demonstration and sales techniques, and sales control systems.

The Tile Setter is often a small business owner that is why they need to know about how to run an office and other administrative duties. The Tile Setter must know many things in order to operate and maintain his profession.
