They use power tools, hand tools and precision equipment to rework and repair plastic products. They are required to read work orders and interpret blueprints in order to plan and carry out the design specifications.

Nature of Work

Plastic fabricators follow patterns laid out on templates, sketches, blueprints or samples with the use of instruments to measure and mark plastic materials. After creating the cutting lines, they cut the plastic material to the specified measurements with knives, cutters, shears, saws or routers depending on the most appropriate tool or equipment. They mix various ingredients called for by the formula they are following such as catalysts, accelerators, resins, colors using tools for this purpose. Plastic fabricators are responsible for setting up and operating the machines used to press, shape or laminate plastic products. They are also involved in operating the oven to cure plastic components or parts. They use the proper tools to trim, drill, ream countersink, grind and finish the different plastic parts according to specifications. Using precision instruments such as calipers and micrometers, plastic fabricators test and verify that the parts’ dimensions are correct. They fit and assemble the finished parts together, and attach the required hardware and fittings to complete the product.

High voltage electricians are necessary to do repairs when large power interruptions occur; they are necessary as well to prevent such outages from happening. They are responsible for making sure that installed electrical wirings and connections are not damaged and they meet technical and safety standards required by state and federal building codes. In testing, they use different tools and instruments to ensure the safe operations electrical components. They may also be required to maintain transformers, motors and electrical controllers when working with bigger power systems. Because they work with high voltage electricity, they must thoroughly understand OSHA and have in-depth knowledge of state and local building codes, the policies of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulations.

Geologic engineers are engaged in the technical analysis of the earth’s crust and assessing the risks presented by existing geological hazards. They ensure that significant geological features that affect construction from an engineering point of view are identified and resolved.

Nature of Work

Geologic engineers are responsible for assessing the integrity of the natural conditions of the rock, soil and groundwater of the project before beginning major construction. They provide advice on the development and appropriateness of the construction ground and materials. They are responsible for analyzing construction sites and designing environmentally sound structures. They monitor areas where development is being done and analyze conditions of the grounds to make sure that the structures being constructed are always secure – during construction and during the eventual use of the facilities. Typical work of geologic engineers include consulting aerial photos and geological maps when choosing development site, studying and assessing the value of site information before conducting field tests and investigations. They also assist in designing structures with the aid of specialized software, assess results as required by construction engineers, collect data and prepare reports. Geologic engineers are also involved in making plans for drilling and analyzing collected deposit or bedrock samples, supervising investigations of construction sites. They also manage other personnel including fellow geologic engineers, contractors and consultants.

Qualifications

Geologic engineers need a bachelor’s degree in geological engineering, geosciences or environmental science. Those who want to pursue research positions in private organizations or government agencies must obtain a master’s degree. Senior level positions for research and teaching in colleges and universities require them to have a doctoral degree. Geologic engineers must have extensive computer knowledge especially in mapping, modeling, and data analysis and integration. They should also be up to date in Geographic Information System (GPS) used to pinpoint the location of mineral deposits. They should also possess excellent written and oral communication skills in order to prepare reports and research proposals. Since many oil and mining firms are overseas, knowledge of another language is an advantage.

Geologists study the crust that envelops the earth to know its composition, structure and history. Their findings have many practical uses, especially today when every nation on earth is becoming aware of the environmental changes that affect the earth’s condition.

The data geologists gather from their investigations are used in constructing buildings, in exploring for mineral sources such as petroleum, coal, natural gas and metals, as well as in planning measures for the protection of the environment. Geologists are employed in museums, private industries, colleges and universities, and the federal government.

Nature of Work

There are different kinds of geologists. Some of them are mineralogist, paleontologists, and engineering geologists. Others specialize in being geomorphologists, oceanographers and geological photogeologist. Each of them study a particular part of the earth’s crust and the results are used in particular applications. In general, geologists employ other sciences to explain and identify the physical, chemical and organic processes that affect the development of the planet. Armed with knowledge and the results of their studies, they locate geothermal, underground water resources, mineral and petroleum deposits that people need to run industries. The geological data they find are used to solve engineering problems when constructing dams, large buildings and tunnels. In general, geologists are experts in the processes involved in the evolution of earth and how they affect each other. Geologists usually work in an office, preparing reports and summarizing the data gathered from the field work of other geologists. When working in the field, geologists set up equipment to take samples, measure and interpret data from samples gathered from the field, prepare reports and abstracts of all the information they have gathered.

Qualifications

Geologists must have a bachelor’s degree if they want to seek government and industry positions. Those who want to teach must have a bachelor’s degree as well as a teaching certificate, depending on the requirements of the state where they seek employment. For those who want to go into research work, government agencies and companies usually prefer candidates with an advanced degree in geology. For teaching positions in colleges and universities, a doctoral degree is required.
