Statistical Assistants Job Description

The Statistical Assistant compiles and computes data according to statistical formulas for use in statistical studies. The Statistical Assistant may perform actuarial computations and compile charts and graphs for use by actuaries.

Duties:

The Statistical Assistant computes and analyzes data, using statistical formulas and computers or calculators. The Statistical Assistant enters data into computers for use in analyses and reports. The Statistical Assistant compiles statistics from source materials, such as production and sales records, quality-control and test records, time sheets, and survey sheets. The Statistical Assistant compiles reports, charts, and graphs that describe and interpret findings of analyses. The Statistical Assistant checks source data to verify completeness and accuracy. The Statistical Assistant participates in the publication of data and information. The Statistical Assistant discusses data presentation requirements with clients. The Statistical Assistant files data and related information and maintains and updates databases. The Statistical Assistant selects statistical tests for analyzing data. The Statistical Assistant organizes paperwork, such as survey forms and reports, for distribution and for analysis.

Knowledge:

The Statistical Assistant needs knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. The Statistical Assistant needs knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. The Statistical Assistant needs knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. The Statistical Assistant needs knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures. The Statistical Assistant needs knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. The Statistical Assistant needs knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Work Activities:

  • The Statistical Assistant uses computers and computer systems including hardware and software to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
  • The Statistical Assistant compiles, codes, categorizes, calculates, tabulates, audits, or verifies information and data.
  • The Statistical Assistant observes, receives, and otherwise obtains information from all relevant sources.
  • The Statistical Assistant provides information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person.
  • The Statistical Assistant identifies information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
  • The Statistical Assistant develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
  • The Statistical Assistant develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time.
  • The Statistical Assistant uses relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations or standards.
  • The Statistical Assistant must keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to your job.

The Statistical Assistant needs the ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem. The Statistical Assistant needs the ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly. The Statistical Assistant needs the ability to see details at a close range for extended periods of time without having too much eye strain. The Statistical Assistant needs the ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
