Certified Public Accountant Job Description

The financial world is a very complex one. There are a lot of checks and balances that needs to be audited to make sure that all financial reports are accurate. Such task is handled by Certified Public Accountant. They are like the big brothers who watches over financial reports such as budgets and any aspect of financial management.

What is a Certified Public Accountant?

A certified public accountant or CPA, are accountants that performs audits for individuals that may include employees as well as big organizations or companies. They also handle different tasks and specialize in other aspects like bookkeeping and financial planning. They make sure that all financial records are accurate and anything that is indicated in the financial report do not have discrepancies.

Duties of a Certified Public Accountant

  • A CPA provides assistance upon consultation for organizations or corporations. It may also include small business or whichever client they have. Their services also include record keeping as well as auditing to identify discrepancies.
  • Researches and provides analysis of the financial report which in turn can yield ideas or suggestions that would allow a company to save money. A good financial plan is created by a CPA as this would attract more investors.
  • Provides ethical financial advice to their clients. CPAs upholds a strict code of ethics and provides good advice that guarantees financial stability for the company.

Work Condition of a Certified Public Accountant

  • A typical CPA works in an office setting. From time to time they will have to go to the client’s site and will be required to travel. They visit different organizations to conduct audit on accounts and handling taxes.
  • Working hours can be from 35 to 40 hours a week, but as with other jobs they will be required to work long hours. This usually happens during tax season and will have to work on overtime as well as weekends to prepare tax returns.

Educational Requirements of a Certified Public Accountant

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting is required to become a CPA. They will also have to take a CPA exam. New graduates must also complete at least 150 hours of related college coursework. A CPA would also have to take further studies to maintain their license. This ensures that they keep themselves updated with any changes in their profession.
  • You need to take note that other bigger companies would require those who have a Master’s Degree in Accounting. Prior experience with related work are also required if you prefer working for a more renowned organization.

Occupation and Progress of a Certified Public Accountant

  • A CPA can get plenty of opportunities. There are several field of expertise a CPA can practice, these are Forensic and Fraud accounting that deals with investigations that are related in any business issues. There are certified public accountants that are promoted to higher positions within a company and some of them even turn out to be as CFO.

It’s not easy to become a Certified Public Accountant. The job entails excellent analytical skills as well as the capability to be as accurate as possible. The rewards however, are all worth the effort that you put in if you consider in having a career in this position.
