Production Clerk Job Description

The Production Clerk coordinates and expedites the flow of work and materials within or between departments of an establishment according to production schedule. Their duties include reviewing and distribution production, work, and shipment schedules; conferring with department supervisors to determine progress of work and completion dates; and compiling reports on progress of work, inventory levels, costs, and production problems.

Tasks for the Production Clerk

  • The Production Clerk examines documents, materials, and products, and monitors work processes, in order to assess completeness, accuracy, and conformance to standards and specifications.

  • The Production Clerk reviews documents such as production schedules, work orders, and staffing tables to determine personnel and materials requirements, and materials requirements, and material priorities.

  • The Production Clerk confers with department supervisors and other personnel to assess progress and discuss needed changes.

  • The Production Clerk revises production schedules when required due to design changes, labor or material shortages, backlogs, or other interruptions, collaborating with management, marketing, sales, production, and engineering.

  • The Production Clerk confers with established personnel, vendors, and customers to coordinate production and shipping activities, and to resolve complaints or eliminate delays.

  • The Production Clerk records production data, including volume produced consumption of raw materials, and quality control measures.

  • The Production Clerk requisitions and maintains inventories of materials and supplies necessary to meet production demands.

  • The Production Clerk calculates figures such as required amounts of labor and materials, manufacturing costs, and wages, using pricing schedules, adding machines, calculators, or computers.

  • The Production Clerk distributes production schedules and work orders to departments.

  • The Production Clerk compiles information, such as production rates and progress, materials inventories, materials used, and customer information, so that status reports can be completed.

Knowledge requirements for Production Clerks

The Production Clerk needs knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. The Production Clerk needs knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. The Production Clerk needs knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. The Production Clerk needs knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources. The Production Clerk needs knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. The Production Clerk needs knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, calculus, statistics, and their applications. The Production Clerk needs knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
