Carpenter Helpers Job Description

The Carpenter Helper helps the Carpenter by performing duties of lesser, skill. The duties include using, supplying or holding materials or tools, and cleaning work area and equipment.

Duties:

The Carpenter Helper positions and holds timbers, lumber, and paneling in place for fastening or cutting. The Carpenter Helper erects scaffolding, shoring, and braces to make it safe for the Carpenters. The Carpenter Helper selects tools, equipment, and materials from storage and transport items to work site. The Carpenter Helper fastens timbers or lumber with glue, screws, pegs, or nails and install hardware. The Carpenter Helper cleans work areas, machines, and equipment, to maintain a clean and safe jobsite. The Carpenter Helper holds plumb bobs, sighting rods, or other equipment to aid in establishing references points and lines. The Carpenter Helper aligns, straightens, plumbs, and squares forms for installations. The Carpenter Helper cuts timbers, lumber and/or paneling to specified dimensions, and drill holes in timbers or lumber. The Carpenter Helper smooth’s and sands surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue, or caulking. The Carpenter Helper performs tie spacing layout and measure, mark, drill or cut.

Skills:

The Carpenter Helper needs certain skills and knowledge in order to do his job function. The Carpenter Helper needs knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads. The Carpenter Helper needs the skill to install equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications. The Carpenter Helper needs the skill to use mathematics to solve problems that are job related. The Carpenter Helper determines the kind of tools and equipment that the Carpenter will be using to do the job. The Carpenter Helper performs routine maintenance on equipment and determines when and what kind of maintenance is needed. The Carpenter Helper obtains and sees to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work. The Carpenter Helper must have the skill to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents and in some cases read blueprints. The Carpenter Helper must also be able to determine causes of operating errors and decide what to do about it. The Carpenter Helper must give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times. The Carpenter Helper adjusts actions in relation to others’ action. The Carpenter Helper manages one’s own time and the time of others.

Abilities:

The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to keep hand and arm steady while moving the arm or while holding the arm and hand in one position. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to see details at close range in order to properly perform their job function. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to quickly move the hand, the hand together with the arm or the two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to use the abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to generate or use different sets of rules for combining or grouping things in different ways. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away from you, or to judge the distance between you and an object. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. This involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue. The Carpenter Helper needs the ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.

Work Activities:

  • The Carpenter Helper performs physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • The Carpenter Helper inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • The Carpenter Helper analyzes information and evaluates results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • The Carpenter Helper develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish their work.
