Construction and Building Inspectors Job Description

The Construction and Building Inspectors job function is to inspect structures using engineering skills to determine structural soundness and compliance with specifications, building codes, and other regulations.

Duties:

The Construction and Building Inspectors issue violation notices and stop-work orders, conferring with owners, violators, and authorities to explain regulations and recommend rectifications. The Construction and Building Inspectors job function is to inspect bridges, dams, highways, buildings, wiring, plumbing, electrical circuits, sewers, heating systems and foundations during and after construction for structural quality, general safety and conformance to specifications and codes. The Construction and Building Inspectors approve and sign plans that meet required specifications. The Construction and Building Inspectors review and interpret plans, blueprints, site layouts, specifications, and construction methods to ensure compliance to legal requirements and safety regulations. The Construction and Building Inspectors monitors installation of plumbing, wiring, equipment, and appliances to ensure that installation is performed properly and is in compliance with applicable regulations. The Construction and Building Inspector inspects and monitors construction sites to ensure adherence to safety standards, building codes, and specifications. The Construction and Building Inspectors measure dimensions and verify level, alignment, and elevation of structures and fixtures to ensure compliance to building plans and codes. The Construction and Building Inspectors maintain daily logs and supplement inspection records with photographs. The Construction and Building Inspectors use survey instruments, metering devices, tape measures, and test equipment, such as concrete strength measurers, to perform inspections. The Construction and Building Inspectors train direct and supervise other construction inspectors.

Knowledge:

The Construction and Building Inspector needs knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads. The Construction and Building Inspector needs knowledge of practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services. The Construction and Building Inspector needs knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. The Construction and Building Inspector needs knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. The Construction and Building Inspector needs knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process. The Construction and Building Inspector needs knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understand fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub-atomic structures and processes.

Skills:
