Millwright Job Description

Maintaining the smooth flow of machineries on construction sites is one of the basic duties of millwrights. Long before, they are just carpenters engaged in doing damaged mechanical belts. They may be tradesman or even craftsmen that assemble engines that are used for processing lumbers, food and others. As of today, millwrights are associated in working for print shops, assembly lines, textile factories and other commercial enterprise where heavy equipments are used.

Duties of Millwrights:

Listed below are the duties of millwrights:

  • Installing machineries
  • Repair of damaged machineries
  • To lift machineries and put them on designated places
  • Aligning gears and attaching motors
  • Connection of belts
  • Positioning machineries
  • Reading blueprints
  • Lubricating equipments

Educational / Training Requirements:

Before millwrights are accepted for a certain job, they are normally asked for some requirements for employment. These are needed to ensure that they may be rightfully employed and difficulties on adjusting on a new environment would be easier. Here are some of the educational and training requirements for millwrights:

  • Hands on Training/Vocational Training/ on the job training for at least 4 years
  • a high school diploma
  • must have a GED (General Education Development)
  • Passed mechanical aptitude tests (needed for they are dealing with assembling machineries)
  • must undergo trainings and technological advances

Skills Needed:

  • Mechanical drawing Skills
  • Must have good communication skills
  • Courses in mathematics and science ( optional but would be useful)
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Welding Skills
  • Carpentry Skills

Enumerated below are some of the power tools and hand tools used by millwrights:

  • Hammers
  • Dollies
  • Rollers
  • Trucks (lift trucks)
  • Wrenches
  • Crowbars
  • Pulleys
  • Cables
  • Ropes
  • Cranes
  • Callipers
  • Hydraulic trucks

Compensations Received:

In the United States, the average salary for millwrights would reach up to $ 45 120. In pay scales at Canada, compensations given to millwrights would be based upon the years of experienced one has worked on. With 1 to 4 years of experience, salaries would be up to $ 52 000, while one with 20 years of association will most likely to receive up to $ 100 000. The longer the experience the higher the rate earned.
