Collection Supervisor Job Description

The collection supervisors work to oversee and manage a team of debt collectors working to obtain money from individuals with past due debts for their clients. They get their start working in the debt collection field and advance through the company to the supervision position.

The Collection Supervisors must be able to do the following task in their job function:

  • The collection supervisors oversee his team of bill collectors.
  • They ensure his staff is meeting production goals, complying with company standards and federal collection laws and generally performing the essential functions of their position.
  • They input data and creating spreadsheets showing the progress of his staff’s efforts to collect debts, for speaking with individuals who wish to speak with a supervisor and for approving and allow settlement and payment options.
  • They supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in collecting overdue payments for charge accounts, credit card accounts, or loans from customers of banks, loan companies, department stores, oil companies, or other credit-card-issuing companies.
  • They review delinquent account records to determine which customers must be contacted for collection of overdue accounts.
  • They organize collection work load according to degree and amount of delinquency and assign accounts to workers for collection.
  • They write letters or approve form letters for use in collection attempts.
  • They authorize or refer accounts to manager for repossession and legal actions against debtors.
  • They may assist subordinates with collection activities in difficult cases.
  • They may supervise and coordinate activities of clerical workers in related activities.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • The collection supervisors are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent. College degree is not required; however, employers prefer workers who have completed at least some college in related courses.
  • They should have successful experience working for two or more years in collections and have past experience working in a call center.
  • They must also know the state laws governing the collection of debt and the laws as mandated by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
