Motor Vehicle Operator Job Description

The Motor Vehicle Operator directly supervises and coordinates activities of transportation and material-moving machine and vehicle operators and helpers.

Duties:

The Motor Vehicle Operator enforces safety rules and regulations while doing his job function. The Motor Vehicle Operator plans work assignments and equipment allocations to meet transportation, or production goals. The Motor Vehicle Operator confers with customers, supervisors, contractors, and other personnel to exchange information to resolve problems. The Motor Vehicle Operator directs workers in transportation or related services, such as pumping, storing, and loading or unloading of materials or people. The Motor Vehicle Operator resolves worker problems or collaborates with employees to assist in problem resolution. The Motor Vehicle Operator reviews, orders, production schedules, blueprints, and shipping or receiving notices to determine work sequences and material shipping dates, types, volumes, and destinations.

The Motor Vehicle Operator monitors field work to ensure that it is being performed properly and that materials are being used as they should be. The Motor Vehicle Operator recommends and implements measures to improve worker motivation, equipment performance, work methods, and customer services. The Motor Vehicle Operator maintains or verifies records of time, materials, expenditures, and crew activities. The Motor Vehicle Operator interprets transportation and tariff regulations, shipping orders, safety regulations, and company policies and procedures for workers.

Activities:

The Motor Vehicle Operator must provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person. The Motor Vehicle Operator must be able to use computers and computer systems including hardware and software to program, write, software, set up functions, enter data, or data, or process information. The Motor Vehicle Operator develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time. The Motor Vehicle Operator must observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources. The Motor Vehicle Operator must handle complaints, settling disputes, and resolving grievances and conflicts, or otherwise negotiating with others. The Motor Vehicle Operator provides guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. The Motor Vehicle Operator must be able to get members of a group to work together accomplish tasks. The Motor Vehicle Operator analyzes information and evaluates results to choose the best solution and solve problems. The Motor Vehicle Operator uses relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations or standards. The Motor Vehicle Operator schedules events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.

Abilities and Skills:

  • The Motor Vehicle Operator must have the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to see details at close range within a few feet of the job function.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to speak clearly so others can understand when you are giving instructions or explaining a situation.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to understand the different speeches of the different people that they will be doing a service for.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand their specific instruction.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the skill to talk to others in order to convey information effectively.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator must have the skill to motivate, develop, and direct people as they work, identify the best people for the job.
  • The Motor Vehicle Operator needs the skill to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
