LVN Positions Job Description

In the health care field, there are several career paths that are being sorted out by a medical care or health care administration. Those careers in a medical care are still in high demand with crucial roles and responsibilities. One of which is obtaining a career as LVN.

What is a LVN?

LVN means Licensed Vocational Nurses who are health care professionals that serve as an ideal entry-level for a rewarding nursing career. LVNs provide care for patients in accordance to various laws that govern the nursing practice. A licensed vocational nurse works under the umbrella of physicians or a registered nurse or RN.

Duties of LVN

  • In general, LVNs provide health care for the injured, the sick, disabled people and convalescent. They are responsible in supervising the works of a CNA (certified nursing assistant) and an unlicensed healthcare provider like graduate nurses.
  • Many LVNs elect in specializing pediatrics, surgery, intensive care units, emergency room, obstetrics, geriatrics, gynecology and other specialties so as to enhance their future careers and boost their nursing skills as well as their salaries.
  • LVN’s job may vary according to their employer and their specialty. Typical duties of LVNs may include blood pressure monitoring and taking pulse rates, giving back rubs, administering medications, preparing injections, monitoring patient’s current status and reporting any adverse reactions to medications and treatments.
  • A vocational nurse may also monitor patient’s catheters, provide alcohol rubs, application of ice packs, wound dressings, ice compress and provide hot water bags, maintain patient’s records and treat bed sores.
  • A licensed vocational nurse may also collect samples for basic testing, perform routine diagnostic test, assist patients on their personal hygiene, feed patients and monitoring food and fluid intake and output.
  • In some other areas, a vocational nurse helps in delivering and caring for infants. Apart from doing bedside care, LPNs in a nursing care facility helps in evaluating patient’s needs, supervise care given by nursing assistants and develop nursing care plans.

Condition of work

LVNs are employed in many health care facilities which include doctor’s offices, hospitals, outpatient departments, health care clinics, long-term facilities, dialysis centers, mental health institution, nursing homes and medical laboratories.

Educational Requirements

In order to work as a LVN, a certification is essential. There are many vocational colleges and schools that offer and accredited LVN program. The basic requirement in enrolling from LVN schools is a GED or high school diploma.

Occupation and Progress

According to OOH or the Occupational Outlook Handbook, job employment for LPNs and LVNs is expected to boost faster than any other occupation. Obtaining a career as LVN also offers the best opportunities in health care facilities. It is also considered as an initial step in becoming a nurse practitioner.
