The primary objective of a Medical Transcriptionist is to transcribe all dictation into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative materials. The transcriber is a small machine with a headset, and it comes with a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary. The reason the Medical Transcriptionists needs to pause the recorder is so that they can type the information into a computer or word processor, editing as necessary for grammar and clarity. The document that they produce includes discharge summaries, medical history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, progress notes, and referral letters.
When the process is completed then the Medical Transcription must return the information to the transcribed documents to the physicians or other health care professionals who dictated them for review and signature or correction. These documents become a part of the patients’ permanent files when everything is completed and signed off. The Medical Transcription keeps a record of the information in a file in their computer. The Medical Transcriptionist must be able to understand medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms. The Medical Transcriptionist refers to standard reference materials in order to identify terms. The reference can be both electronic and printed but it must be up-to-date material. Since some of these materials are located on the internet the Medical Transcriptionist must be able to do research. The use of the internet greatly cuts down on the work that the Medical Transcriptionist must do. In many cases it is a matter of getting this material identified and coded that takes up the Medical Transcriptionist time. The Medical Transcriptionist must be a very good typist with great accuracy. There is no room for error in this profession. The Medical Transcriptionist must comply with specific standards that apply to the style of medical records and to the legal and ethical requirements for keeping the patients information confidential. Currently, most health care providers transmit dictation to Medical Transcriptionists using either digital or analog dictating equipment. The Internet has grown to be a popular mode for transmitting documentation. Many Medical Transcriptionists receive dictation over the Internet and are able to return transcribed documents to clients for approval. The invention of the internet has made doing transcribed work much easier and faster.

The travel is much better because working from homes means that they do not have to fight heavy highway traffic or have the expense of maintaining an automobile for the purpose of work.
