The Chief Information Officer is responsible for identifying all personnel required and responsible for Information Technology functions within a business unit.

The CIO is a major proponent for long term education and cost effective operations for IT to ensure its continuous success. This position is one of the most important roles in an enterprise. The CIO works with different departments and has systematic functions tied to the maintenance of technology infrastructure as well as digital property for the business unit.

The Chief Information Officer must be able to do the following task in their job function:

  • The Chief Information Officer will work with a team of IT professionals and is responsible for creating the IT infrastructure as well as safeguard its policies for the entire enterprise. The CIO is in charge of creating a structural hierarchy in the IT department including hardware and software personnel allocations, and provides information systems updates to maintain relative adaptation with new technology.
  • The Chief Information Officer ensures that the IT aligned with the business directives and need for appropriate technology which is evolving. The CIO provides recommendations for machine and software ramp ups to ensure that the business functions at an outstanding pace in terms of workforce productivity and information security.

Skills that Chief Information Officer should posses:

  • The Chief Information Officer is expected to have leadership skills, demonstrating the importance of good decision making and strategic discipline through example.
  • An tertiary knowledge of Information Technology is required, with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Engineering as the entry level educational qualification. A masters degree in Engineering or Information Technology Management is ideal.
  • The candidate must possess Managerial skills and have been trained in the different disciplines of leadership development. The CIO propels the standard in communication and knowledge building in the corporate setup, hence he must be a working example of performance measure within the Information Technology key performance indicators.

  • Chief Information Officers are in charge of fostering relationships with internal and external clients through professionalism and excellent business directive for maintaining the IT interest of the business.
  • The Chief Information Officer will work as a team leader for a team of IT professionals and is expected to create and manage specific roles for each member such as both hardware and software divisions.
