Chief Operating Officer (COO) Job Description

The Chief Operating Officer (C I O) is the one who directs and manages the computing and information technology strategic plan, policies, programs and schedules for business and finance data processing.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Chief Operating Officer is in charge of network communications, and management information services.
  • The Chief Operating Officer directs and manages computing and information technology strategic plans, policies, programs, and schedules for business and fiancé data processing, computer services, network communications, and management information services to accomplish corporate goals and objectives.
  • The Chief Operating Officer is responsible to direct the information and data integrity of the company and its business units.

The Chief Operating Officer is the one who evaluates overall operations of computing and information technology functions and recommend enhancements. The Chief Operating Officer is advisor to senior management on strategic systems and conversions and integrations in support of business goals and objectives. The Chief Operating Officer prepares objectives and budgets to facilitate the orderly and efficient capture, storage, processing and disseminate of information. The Chief Operating Officer normally does the interaction with company managers on both internal and external operations that are impacted by the equipment. The Chief Operation Officer needs to review and approve major contracts for computing and information technology services and equipment.

The security of any corporation’s information system is vital. They have hackers who try to interface stealing patients, product information, and vital statics. The Chief Operating Officer is in charge of making sure that there is a very tight security on the information system. This security and codes need to be changed in order to keep hackers from intruding and stealing important information. Industrial espionage is one of the major crimes today. Many corporations Chief Operating Officers need to be very careful about the programs that they install and the safety features that they use.

The Chief Operating Officers needs to be able to instruct and teach officer personnel, executives and board members how to use the information system that he/she has installed in order to keep the offices running smoothly. It is not possible to have open classes because everyone has busy work schedules so the Chief Operating Officer conducts group instruction and in some cases private lessons. It is also probable that he has a crew under him that he has already trained so he can utilize their help to train others who need to be trained.

The Chief Operating Officer must assess new technologies and see if they would be of a beneficial use to the company. Then after the Chief Operating Officer has made his determination must control implementation of the new technology into the system making sure that all security measures are being adhered too. Everyone who needs to use this new technology must be trained how to use the programs in an efficient manner. The Chief Operating Officer must serve on planning and policy-making committees. The Chief Operating Officer establishes and implements short and long range departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures. The Chief Operating Officer is the one who establishes company infrastructure to support and guide individual divisions, departments and sites in computing information technology efforts.

A Chief Operating Officer needs experience in strategic planning and execution. The Chief Operating Officer needs knowledge in contracting, negotiating, and change management procedures. The Chief Operating Officer needs knowledge of information technology computer systems and software and the ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes. The Chief Operating Officer needs to be able to simultaneously manage several projects while working with his team. The Chief Operating Officer needs to have the ability to produce professionally his communication skills both written and verbally. They must be able to motivate teams to produce quality work while they are facilitating group meetings. The Chief Operating Officer must have a Masters Degree in information technology or computer science and ten years of experience in senior-level information technology position. The Chief Operating Officer works with a flexible schedule and receives most of his training in the corporation that he plans on being with in this position. Since there are a lot of security measures most companies do not like hiring outside of their own companies they prefer to hire someone who has worked in the communication department training them as they progress.
