Engineering Job Description

Engineering is the science, discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or inventions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Engineers in today’s world are more inclined to put in technical support towards projects.
  • Engineers today help with a variety of projects from building, to medical, to art.
  • Today’s Engineers must have a good grasp in the field of Technology, math skills and the ability to create as well as build.
  • Today’s Engineers must be capable of applying scientific principles to design or development of structures for the modern world.
  • The Engineer today must have a Masters Degree and possess a licensing in the field of engineering study they elect to work.

The Engineer today has a choice in the field of study that they may major in and of course this discipline determines the type of engineering work that they will be working. There are a variety of disciplines that branch off of the field of Engineering and they are:

  1. Aerospace Engineering is the design of aircraft, spacecraft and related topics. Most Aerospace Engineers work in government facilities and their work are highly classified.
  2. Civil Engineering is the construction of public and private works such as the infrastructure of roads, railways, water supply and treatment etc. The Civil Engineer is used in the construction of bridges and overpasses on highways.
  3. Chemical Engineers works in the exploitation of chemical principles in order to carry out large scale chemical processing, as well as designing new specialty materials and fuels. Their work has proven to be very effective in modern society today in preserving our eco systems.
  4. Mechanical Engineers design physical or mechanical systems, such as engines, power trains, kinematic chains and vibration isolation equipment.
  5. Material Engineers investigates the relationship between the structure of materials at both the atomic and molecular scales and how this relationship relates to the materials macroscopic properties.
  6. These are your basic categories of Engineering; however, with the advancement of modern Technology many new fields of engineering are gaining prominence. These newer fields of Engineering are:

    1. Computer Engineering the study of and creation of computers, their intra-structure and capabilities.
    2. Software Engineering which is the creation of programs that the computer can run giving the user more capabilities to perform tasks and contact people all around the world.
    3. Nanotechnology a form of engineering that is vastly growing and being taught in Universities around the world.
    4. Molecular Engineering is a very advanced field of studies that requires the use of specialized equipment.
    5. These are just a few of the newer fields introduced in the Engineering Programs that are being taken up by our modern society. These fields of study were brought about with the creation of the computer, microchips and other far advanced studies of modern futuristic creations. The microwave oven that we use as a common product in our household has only been with us a decade and came about because of the use of radiation.

      In order to be an Engineer you must be capable of applying the sciences of physics and mathematics to find suitable solutions to problems or to make improvements to the status quo. Engineers are required to have knowledge of relevant sciences for their design projects; as a result, they keep on learning new material through their career. Engineers use their knowledge of science, mathematics, and appropriate experience to find solutions to a problem. When you attend an accredited college or university your main course of studies is generally that in mathematics and science. The student may work on a model problem where they need to be able to solve it by the use of mathematics but also may find that there are multiple solutions to the problem. This is where their knowledge and ability to reason comes in so that they can define the correct solution to the problem. Engineers must predict how well their project will work and is it cost effective. It is very common for an Engineer to make a prototype, a scale model, which can be tested before the actual start of full-scale production.
