The Operations Manager is there to improve the operational systems, processes and policies of a corporation. The Operations Manager has many functions that help the business operate on a smooth even status.

The Operational Manager provides consulting services on matters related to fundraising, tax and insurance questions. Providing information on business structure and growth is part of the duties of the Operational Manager. One of the major functions is to serve as primary liaison to legal counsel in addressing legal issues e.g. copyright, antitrust, and governing, instruments, partnerships, licensing etc. One very vital function is that of overseeing organizational insurance policies. The Operational Manager plays a very important part in financial management, planning, systems and controls. The person must manage the budget in coordination with the Executive Director. It is very important that each program has a budget and the Operational Manager must tend to this working with the accounting departments.
The Operational Manager duties are very vital when it comes to invoicing to funding sources including calculation of completed units of services. Payroll is one of the functions that The Operational Manager must tabulate including the accrued employee benefits. He is the one who disburses the checks that pay the corporations expenses. Fiscal planning is another important function that is controlled by the Operational Manager. Keeping the fiscal documents in order, conducting regular meetings with the Executive Director around fiscal planning is part of the Operational Managers position. The Operational Manager is responsible to supervise and coach office managers on a weekly basis. These functions are important in keeping the corporation business needs in good order.
In order to qualify for the position of Operational Manager you must have a strong commitment to social justice and the mission. You should have three years experience in Financial Management as this is part of your functions as the Operational Manager. Most corporations will not appoint anyone in that position unless they have a strong background with work experience in Finance. You need to have excellent computer skills and be proficient in these programs:
- Excel
- Word
- Outlook
- Access
It goes without saying that your communication skills must be excellent in both writing and verbal. You need at least three years if not more in bookkeeping. You should be able to demonstrate leadership and vision in managing staff groups and major projects or initiatives. It is necessary to have a good background in budget development and oversight experience. The Operations Manager is just that the person who is in control of “Operations”. You should demonstrate commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace. You will be working with people that come from different beliefs, religions, cultures and methods of thinking so you need to be able to work well with others no matter their background. The Operations Manager needs to be able to look at situations from several points of view and make sound judgments on the best method to use. After you have made the decision on how to handle the situation then you will need very good persuasive skills presenting your decision using details and facts. You will need to be able to keep track of all meetings and the different decisions and what basis you make your decisions. Your communication skills as an Operational Manager are vital.
The Operational Manager has many functions and it is impossible to carry them all out personally therefore you must delegate some responsibilities in an effect manner that is good for you and the company. You are working in a diverse environment but you still need to maintain a high comfort level in order to function properly. Your capabilities are many but there are only so many work hours during the day that is why it is vital that you keep organized, delegate, and stay on top of the operations of the business.
