Roustabouts Job Description

The Roustabouts job function is to assemble or repair oil field equipment using hand and power tools. They are also required to perform other tasks as needed.


The Roustabouts job is to clean up spilled oil by balling it into barrels. The Roustabouts job is to unscrew or tighten pipes, casing, tubing, and pump rods, using hand and power wrenches and tongs. The Roustabout bolts together pump and engine parts. The Roustabout walks flow lines to locate leaks, using electronic detectors and making visual inspections. The Roustabout must move pipes to and from trucks, using truck winches and motorized lifts, or by hand. The Roustabouts dismantle and repair oil field machinery, boilers, and steam engine parts, using hand tools and power tools. The Roustabouts dig drainage ditches around wells and storage tanks. The Roustabout keeps pipe deck and main deck areas clean and tidy. The Roustabout guides cranes to move loads about decks and makes sure that all safety precautions are maintained. The Roustabout supplies equipment to rig floors as requested, and provides assistance to roughnecks.


The Roustabout needs knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. The Roustabout needs knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property and institutions. The Roustabout needs knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. The Roustabout needs knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules, of composition, and grammar. The Roustabout needs knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits. The Roustabout needs knowledge of prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications, to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub-atomic structures and processes.


The Roustabout is required to have certain skills in order to do his job function. Some of these skills requires are:

Active Listening- They must give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Equipment Maintenance- The Roustabout performs routine maintenance on equipment and determines when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

Repairing- The Roustabout must have the skill to repair machines or systems using the needed tools.

Coordination- The Roustabout needs the skill to adjust actions in relation to the actions of other’s or work related problems.

Operation Monitoring- The Roustabout needs the skill to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure the machines are operating properly. They must also have the skill to make the proper adjustments to keep all machinery in good working order.

Troubleshooting- The Roustabouts needs the skill to determine causes of operating errors and decide what to do about it.

Active Learning- The Roustabout needs the skill of understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem solving and decision making.

Equipment Selection- The Roustabout needs the skill to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

Installation- The Roustabout needs the skill to install equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.

Critical Thinking- The Roustabout needs the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

Work Activities

The Roustabout uses hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things. The Roustabout inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. The Roustabout observes, receives, and other wise obtains information from all relevant sources. The Roustabout performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body. The Roustabout must be capable of identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events. The Roustabout must be able to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems. They also need to be able to monitor and review information from materials, events, or the environment to detect or assess problems.
