The Public Relations Specialists handles organizational functions such as media, community, consumer, industry and governmental relations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Public Relations Specialists recognizes the importance of good public relations to the success of their organization.
  • The Public Relations Specialists provides advice on the strategy to use for public opinion.
  • The Public Relations Specialists also is in charge of being an advocate for business, nonprofit associations, universities, hospitals and other organizations.
  • The Public Relations Specialists duty is to tell the organizations story by the use of the media, meetings, and anyway possible to help the view point as perceived by the public.
  • The Public Relation Specialists must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Communications.

The Public Relations Specialists handle organizational functions such as media, community, consumer, industry and governmental relations; political campaigns; interest-group representation; conflict mediation; and employee and investor relations. The Public Relation Specialist must understand the attitudes and concerns of community. In this manner the Public Relation Specialist is better able to represent his company in a good light with the community.
The person working as a Public Relation Specialist in the industry sector do more than just “tell the organizational story” they must understand the attitudes and concerns of community, consumer, employee, and public interest groups and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with them and with representatives from print and broadcast journalism. The Public Relations Specialists draft press releases and contact people in the media who might print or broadcast their material. The Public Relation Specialists starts such things as radio or television special reports, newspaper stores, and magazine articles start that help influence the public opinion on an individual or an organization.

The Public Relation Specialists often start programs to help keep contact between their organization and individual with the public some programs are speaking engagements, visual presentations presented at school assemblies or church gatherings. They might even prepare a convention where many different members of the organization can get together and they can give them information to grow closer to the company. The Public Relation Specialist is responsible for preparing annual reports and writing proposals for various projects.

Some Public Relation Specialist work in government and are called press secretaries, information officers, public affairs specialists, or communication specialists. Just like working in the private sector these Public Relation Specialists keep the public informed about the activities of agencies and officials that are part of the government. The Public Relation Specialist in the U.S. Department of State is referred to as the Public Affairs Specialist and they keep the public informed of travel advisories and of U.S. positions on foreign issues. In Congress the Public Relation Specialist is called a press secretary for a member of Congress and keeps constituents aware of the representative’s accomplishments.

In large organizations the key Public Relation Specialist executive is often a vice president, may develop overall plans and policies with other executives. The Public Relations Departments hire Public Relation Specialists to write, research, prepare materials, maintain contacts, and respond to inquiries. This is necessary for the corporations to stay on top of public opinion and deter any negative feelings towards the company or its products. It only takes one bad rumor to cause a downfall in sales. This must be stopped and the correct information put forth. The Public Relation Specialist must also keep the public opinion always in a positive mode. Many times major corporations are faced with rumors, unsolicited reviews, and other negative reports that a Public Relation Specialist can soon overcome with the right news story, magazine review or other forms of media.

The Public Relation Specialist who handles publicity for an individual or who directs public relations for a small organization deal with all aspects of the job. They contact people, plan and research, and prepare materials for distribution. The Public Relation Specialist may handle advertising or sales promotions work to support marketing efforts. The work of the Public Relation Specialist is very important to everyone who works in the company. The government has found that a good Public Relation Specialist can determine how people accept news that comes from the Congress, President, and other officials.
