What is an NDT Inspector?

An NDT Inspector is a highly trained individual who is responsible finding damage in any products, components, or systems before it becomes a major problem. They find damage before it reaches to its limits. They use NDT techniques and methods to ensure safety of any component or structure.

Duties of an NDT Inspector

The NDT Inspector has a wide range of responsibilities depending on what industry he/she is employed. In general, the NDT Inspector is responsible for all required NDT inspection hold points that have been developed and established by NDT project specifications and methods. NDT Inspectors are responsible for any quality related NDT issues in the field or industry

The NDT Inspector ensures correct implementation of project quality plan in an industry. In a manufacturing industry, the NDT Inspector monitors the pipeline NDT activities for all welding repairs in a daily basis. NDT Inspectors ensure that project specifications are accomplished in a timely and an accurate manner. In addition to that, they also ensure that reports that are required are completed accordingly to the project specifications.

The NDT inspector works in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Manager. He/she discusses NDT deficiencies, safe and quality specifications to the Quality Assurance Manager including the negative inspections. Aside from that, he/she brings any security, safety, and environmental issues to the attention of the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Manager.

The NDT inspector also works in maintaining NDT inspection documents and related quality documents according to the project quality plan.

Work Condition of an NDT Inspector

The work condition of an NDT Inspector may vary different industries, different locations, and different employers. The NDT Inspector may work in the field such as rail inspection, aircraft inspection, bridge inspection, storage tank inspection, wire rope inspection, and pipeline inspection. He/she is always present in every industry operation. They may work for long hours depending on what is required by the industry. An individual who is an NDT inspector must also be physically fit since some of tasks require lifting of some equipment.

The nature of work of the NDT Inspector is sometimes associated with danger. They maybe expose to radiation or certain chemicals. However, good safety habits will protect the NDT Inspector from a potential danger.

Educational Requirements of an NDT Inspector

The minimum educational requirement of an NDT Inspector is a bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent. He must also undergo in NDT training. There are also certifications required depending on what field of industry. There are different NDT certifications for different fields of NDT.
