Avionics Technician Job Description

Avionics Technicians inspect, test, and repair the electronic components of communication, navigation, and flight control systems of aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles.

Primary objectives:

  • The Avionics Technicians primary responsibilities are back, test and the pair, electronic components of communications, navigation and flight control systems.

  • The Avionics Technician must have a high school diploma and a four year training program at a technical institution or community college.

  • Avionics technicians find that large aerospace companies and the armed forces provide on-the-job training does it take to their requirements.

  • The Avionics Technician knows that they must have education and on-the-job training before they can secure a job in their trade.

Avionics Technicians work with engineers to develop and install new electronic systems and calibrate them to specification. Avionic Technicians usually specialize in particular systems, such as computerized guidance, flight control equipment. Avionics Technicians must complete & maintenance and installation documents for every piece of equipment that they are responsible for after their completion and repair. The training for an Avionics Technician never ends as they must up to date by reading technical articles and attends seminars and training courses.

Many Avionics Technicians repair such things as radar, radio, pulse navigation, auto pilot, and compass systems. The Avionics Technician installed these items in aircraft and space vehicles using hand tools. The Avionics Technician inspects components of avionics equipment for defects, such as loose connections and frayed wire, and for accuracy of assembly and installation.

Test avionics equipment under simulated or actual operating conditions to determine performance and air worthiness, using test equipment such as off oscilloscopes, digital meters and counters, and circuit analyzers. The Avionics Technician adjust, the payers, or replaces defective components based on analysis of test results, following blueprints, schematics, and books and other technical documents, using hand tools. The Avionic Technician calibrates installed or repaired equipment to prescribed specification. They adjust frequencies of radio sets, by signaling ground stations and turning set screws. The Avionic Technician must possess radio tell phone licenses issued by The Federal Communication Commission. The Avionic Technician accompanies the flight crew to perform in-flight adjustments and to determine and record required post-light repair work. The Avionic Technician is responsible to sign overhaul documents for equipment replaced or repaired. The Avionic Technician may operate ground stations aired to station check of radar or other equipment.

The Avionic Technician is very important to the communication system of airplanes and space vehicles. The Avionic Technician works with the engineers to develop and install new electronic systems. The Avionic Technician must calibrate the electronic systems to make sure that the aircraft works properly without any problems while in operation. That is why they often accompany the crew of the aircraft when it is taken out so that they can make sure that the calibrations made on the ground are working in mid-air. If this does not work then the Avionic Technician may work at a ground station to determine what the problem maybe. Since the Avionic Technician is initially working from blueprints provided to him by the engineers they first must assume that the initial installation is not correctly installed. Afterwards the Avionic Technician then looks into the blueprints to determine if they could be at fault returning them to the engineers for review and corrections.

The Avionic Technician then must recheck everything and test the equipment from scratch to make sure there are no problems. After thorough examination and testing the Avionic Technician then must sign documents of approval so that the existing equipment maybe kept in full operation. Many Avionic Technicians work for large aerospace companies or either they work for the armed forces. Even though they are equipped to handle the job they must continue with their education by attending seminars and reading technical magazines pertaining to their field of interest.

The Avionic Technician must be capable of using hand held tools and instruments such as oscilloscopes and other electronic equipment. They must also be able to work with computerized guidance and flight-control equipment. Many Avionic Technicians are required to read blueprints that are found on the computer or created by the engineer on specialized computer programs. The Avionic Technician must be capable of making detailed reports on the type of repairs they make and the replacement pieces used.
