Hazardous Materials Removal Workers Job Description

A Hazardous Materials Removal Worker is commonly referred to as a Hazmat Removal Worker. The Hazmat Removal Worker must be able to identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, contaminated soil, etc.

Special Requirements for a Hazmat Removal Worker:

A Hazmat Removal Worker must have specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling or a confined entry permit are generally required.  The Hazmat Removal Worker may operate earth-moving equipment or trucks.

The Tasks of a Hazmat Removal Worker are as follows:

  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must follow prescribed safety procedures, and comply with federal laws regulating waste disposal methods.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must record numbers of containers stored at disposal sites, and specify amounts and types of equipment and waste disposed.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must drive trucks or other heavy equipment to convey contaminated waste to designated sea or ground locations.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must operate machines and equipment to remove, package, store or transport loads of waste materials.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must load and unload materials into containers and onto trucks, using hoists or forklifts.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker cleans contaminated equipment or areas for re-use, using detergents and solvents, sandblasters, filter pumps, and steam cleaners.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker constructs scaffolding or builds containment areas prior to beginning abatement or decontamination work.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker removes asbestos and/or lead from surfaces, using hand and power tools such as scrapers, vacuums, and high-pressure sprayers.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker unloads baskets of irradiated elements onto packaging machines that automatically insert fuel elements into canisters and secure lids.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker applies chemical compounds to lead-based paint, allows compounds to dry, and then scrape the hazardous material into containers for removal and/or storage.

A Hazmat Removal Worker must possess knowledge in the following:

  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits.

A Hazmat Removal Worker must have the following skills:

  • A Hazmat Removal Worker watches gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • A Hazmat Removal Worker must have the skill to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker performs routine maintenance on equipment and determines when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker determines the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker controls operations of equipment systems.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker understands written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker monitors and assesses performance of other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • The Hazmat Removal Worker must have the skill to teach others how to do certain things to prevent hazardous accidents and also what to do in case of an accident. Many times the supervisor must take action in case of an accident to prevent the whole crew from being infected or to help an individual.
