Pipe-layer Helpers Job Description

The Pipe-layer Helper is the one who helps the plumbers, pipefitters, steamfitters, or Pipe-layers by performing duties of lesser skill.The duties of the Pipe-layer include using, supplying or holding materials or tools, and clean-up work areas’ and equipment.


The Pipe-layer Helper assists plumbers by performing rough-ins, repairing and replacing fixtures, and locating and repairing leaking or broken pipes. The Pipe-layer Helper job function is to cut or drill holes in walls or floors to accommodate the passage of pipes. The Pipe-layer Helper measures, cut, thread and assemble new pipe, placing the assembled pipe in hangers or other supports. The Pipe-layer Helper mounts brackets and hangers on walls and ceilings to hold pipes, and set sleeves or inserts to provide support for pipes. The Pipe-layer Helper knows that they must requisition tools and equipment, select type and size of pipe, and collects and transport materials and equipment to work site. The Pipe-layer Helper fits or assists in fitting valves, couplings, or assemblies to tanks, pumps, or systems, using hand tools. The Pipe-layer Helper may assist pipe fitters in layout, assembly, and installation of piping for air, ammonia, gas and water systems. The Pipe-layer Helper excavates and grades ditches and lay and joins pipes for water and sewer devices. The Pipe-layer Helper cuts pipes and lifts up to fitters. The Pipe-layer Helper must disassemble and remove damaged or worn pipes before they can help with the laying of new pipes.


  • The Pipe-layer Helper- performs general physical activities. The Pipe-layer Helper performs physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • The Pipe-layer Helper- uses hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
  • The Pipe-layer Helper- inspects equipment, structures, or materials. The Pipe-layer inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

The Pipe-layer Helper must have the ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/ or legs. The Pipe-layer Helper must have the ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules such as patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations. The Pipe-layer Helper must have the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences or in writing. The Pipe-layer Helper needs the ability to use their abdominal and lower back muscles to support parts of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing. The Pipe-layer Helper needs the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects.
