Painters, Construction Job Description

A Painter job function is to paint walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and other structural surfaces, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns. The Painter removes old paint to prepare surface prior to painting. The Painter also may mix colors or oils to obtain desired color or consistency.

Tasks performed by the Painter

  • The Painter covers surfaces with drop clothes or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  • The painter fills cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty plaster, or other filters, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  • The Painter applies primers or seals to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, finish coats.
  • The Painter applies paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges, and/or structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
  • The Painter calculates amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements and/or work orders.

The Painter reads work orders or receives instructions from supervisors or homeowners in order to determine work requirements.

  • The Painter erects scaffolding and swing gates, or sets up ladders, to work above ground level.
  • The Painter removes fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.

  • The Painter washes and treats surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes with adhere property.

Tools and Technology Used in the trade

  • Hand sprayers – Hopper guns, Pneumatic spray texture guns, Spray texture guns, Stucco patching guns
  • Paint Sprayers – Airless spray equipment, High velocity low pressure HGLP spraying equipment, Spray guns, Stripping machines
  • Power sanders – Disk sanders, Electric paint removers, Paint stripping equipment, Sanders
  • Pressure or steam cleaners – Hydro blasters, Pressure washers, Steam cleaning equipment, Wallpaper steamers
  • Putty knives – Drywall taping knives, patching knives, Spackling knives

The Painter needs to be able to use accounting software package in his work. The Painter needs knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs, assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. The Painter needs knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. The Painter needs knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology. The painter needs knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. The painter needs knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits. The Painter needs knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning resource allocation, human resources, model, leadership technique production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Skills needed by the Painter

  • The Painter needs the skill of active listening. This includes giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • The Painter needs the skill of Time Management. This includes managing their time as well as the time of the crew.
  • The Painter needs the skill of coordination. This means the ability to adjust actions in relation to others’ actions.
  • The Painter needs the skill of equipment selection. This includes determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do job.
  • The Painter needs the skill to instruct that is the ability to teach others how to perform their job duties.
  • The Painter needs the ability to talk to others explaining how to do things.
  • The Painter needs the skill of reading comprehension. This includes understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • The Painter needs the skill of management of material resources. This includes obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
  • The Painter needs the skill to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
