Transportation Manager Job Description

Primary Objectives:

  • The Transportation Manager is the one who plans, organizes and manages the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.

  • The Transportation Manager will direct investigations to verify and resolve customer or shipper complaints.

  • The Transportation Manager serves as a contact person for all workers within assigned territories.

The Transportation Manager is the one who implements schedules and policy changes for the workers who are under their jurisdiction. Usually a Transportation Manager is assigned certain territories that they are put in charge of and then they must of course work with other Transportation Managers that are out of their territory when it comes to situations that happen out of territory but affects their district. The Transportation Manager collaborates with other managers and staff members in order to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives. The Transportation Manager monitors operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts and government regulations.

The Transportation Manager conducts safety meetings with employees in order to make sure that everyone is up to date in all the procedures. The Transportation Manager also must make sure that everyone on staff is properly trained in all safety measures while in the warehouse and on the road. Often the Transportation Manager may take the time to work individual staff members especially the newer ones to insure that safety is top priority. The employee’s must adhere to government and union regulations as well. It is important that they have up-to-date materials and the Transportation Manager is the one who updates all materials.

The Transportation Manager develops criteria, application instructions, procedural manuals, and contracts for federal and state public transportation programs. The Transportation Manager monitors spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets. The supplies and payroll are a major factor in the cost factor and excess waste can make all these expenses seem much higher than they really need to be. The Transportation Manager is in charge of ordering the supplies and must make sure that he cuts back on any materials that are not needed. He also controls the crew of workers so he must make sure that he does not over staff or have staff waiting an extended period of time to receive materials. The importance of connecting on time and in a timely manner can be cost effective if done properly. If it is not done in a timely manner and the drivers have to wait then it can become expensive and the dock where the merchandise is setting will lose money. That is why the Transportation Manager must be careful about those he hires to unload and load goods as well as when he calls on drivers to take the merchandise to the appropriate place. The Transportation Manager often directs and coordinates, through subordinates, activities of operations department in order to obtain use of equipment, facilities, and human resources. The Transportation Manager directs the activities of staff performing repairs and maintenance to equipment, and facilities.

The Transportation Manager conducts investigations in cooperation with government agencies to determine causes of transportation accidents and to improve safety procedures. It is not only important to instruct on safety but sometimes it is necessary to investigate whenever an accident happens. It is very important to determine the cause of the accident and any method that could be taken to prevent farther accidents. The Transportation Manager must analyze expenditures and other financial information in order to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services. Farther the Transportation Manager negotiates and authorizes contracts with equipment and material suppliers, and monitor contract fulfillment. The Transportation Manager supervises workers assigning tariff classifications and preparing billing. The Transportation Manager sets operation policies and standards, including determination of safety procedures for the handling of dangerous goods.

The Transportation Manager recommends or authorizes capital expenditures for acquisition of new equipment or property in order to increase efficiency and services of operations department. The Transportation Manager prepares management recommendations, such as proposed fee and tariff increases or schedule changes. The Transportation Manager conducts employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientation, quality improvement and computer use.
