Tree Pruners Job Description

The Tree Pruner cuts away dead or excess branches from trees or shrubs to maintain right-of-way for roads, sidewalks, or utilities, or to improve appearance, health, and value of tree. The Tree Pruner prunes or treats shrubs using handsaws, pruning hooks, shears, and clippers. The Tree Pruner may use truck-mounted lifts and power pruners. The Tree Pruner may fill cavities in trees to promote healing and prevent deterioration.

Tasks for Tree Pruners

• The Tree Pruner supervises others engaged in tree trimming work and train lower-level employees.
• The Tree Pruner operates boom trucks, loaders, stump chippers, brush chippers, tractors, power saws, trucks, sprayers, and other equipment and tools.
• The Tree Pruner climbs trees, using climbing hooks and belts, or climb ladders to gain access to work areas.
• The Tree Pruner cleans, sharpens, and lubricates tools and equipment.
• The Tree Pruner cuts away dead and excess branches from trees, or clear branches around power lines around power branches, using climbing equipment or buckets of extended truck booms, and/or chainsaws, hooks, handsaws, shears, and clippers.
• The Tree Pruner trims, tops, and reshapes trees to achieve attractive shapes or to remove low-hanging branches.
• The Tree Pruner prunes, cut down, fertilize, and spray trees as directed by tree surgeons.
• The Tree Pruner hoist tools and equipment to tree trimmers, and lower branches with ropes or block and tackle.
• The Tree Pruner operates shredding and chipping equipment, and feed limbs and brush into the machines.
• The Tree Pruner loads debris and refuse onto trucks and hauls it away for disposal.
