Environmental Science and Protection Technicians Job Description

The Environmental Science and Protection Technician performs laboratory and field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those that affect health.

Task Requirements for Environmental Science and Protection Technician

  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician collect samples of gases, soils, water, industrial wastewater, and asbestos products to conduct tests on pollutant levels and identify sources of pollution.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician records test data and prepares reports, summaries and charts that interpret test results.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician develop and implements programs for monitoring of environmental pollution and radiation.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician discuss test results and analyses with customers.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician sets up equipment or stations to monitor and collect pollutants from sites, such as smoke stacks, manufacturing plants, or mechanical equipment.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician maintain files such as hazardous waste databases, chemical usage data, personnel exposure information and diagrams showing equipment locations.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician develop testing procedure or direct activities of workers in laboratories.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician prepare samples or photomicrographs for testing and analysis.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician calibrate microscopes and tests instruments.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician examine and analyze material for presence and concentration of contaminants such as asbestos, using variety of microscopes.

Knowledge requirements for the Environmental Science and Protection Technician

The Environmental Science and Protection Technician need knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician need knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician needs knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician need knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician needs the knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician need knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician need knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

The Environmental Science and Protection Technicians need knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician needs knowledge of the plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment. The Environmental Science and Protection Technician needs knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub-atomic structures and processes.

  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician needs the skill of understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • The Environmental Science and Protection Technician needs the skill to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
