A Security Guard is suppose to guard, patrol or monitor premises to prevent theft, violence, or infractions against a business or an organization.
Primary Responsibilities:
- A Security Guard patrols industrial and commercial premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
- A Security Guard maybe called upon to transport money, jewelry or other precious contents from one area to another for safe keeping.
A Security Guard maybe called upon by a company to monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, visitors and other persons in order to guard against theft. The Security Guard is responsible to maintain secure premises. The Security Guard must be capable of writing reports about the daily activities and irregularities such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons or unusual occurrences. A Security Guard must call the police or fire departments in cases of emergency. When a Security Guard faces unauthorized persons who refuse to leave the area then they should call the police at once. The Security Guard must call the Fire Dept. if they smell smoke or have a sense that a fire is present or about to break out.
The Security Guard is expected to circulate among visitors, patrons and employees to preserve order and protect property. Most companies use their Security Guards during company gatherings or important meetings to help maintain a peaceful atmosphere. Very often a Security Guard must answer telephone calls to take messages, answer questions and provide information during non-business hours or when the switchboard is closed. The Security Guard is required after he has warned people of infractions or violations to apprehend or evict violators from premises, using force when necessary.
The Security Guard must know how to operate detecting devices to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas. The Security Guard is expected to be able to drive motor vehicles to escort individuals to specified locations and to provide personal protection. The Security Guard must inspect and adjust security systems, equipment, and machinery to ensure operational use and to detect evidence of tampering. In some cases Security Guards drive and guard armored vehicle to transport money and valuables to prevent theft and ensure safe delivery. A Security Guard might be expected to monitor and adjust controls that regulate building systems such as air conditioning units or furnaces for heating systems.
A Security Guard is expected to have knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. The Security Guard must have good communication skills since they are working with all different types of people of different ethnic backgrounds, beliefs and understandings. The Security Guard must show great principles and show adequate processes for providing customer and personal services. The Security Guard must provide help for customer needs make assessment of situations, and above all have a quality of standards for services that he/she provides. The Security Guard must have a good knowledge of the English Language being able to read and write with good grammar and spelling. The Security Guard should know the rules of composition in order to make written reports. Many Security Guards are required to have Computer skills using word processing and excel for database entries. Since the Security Guard must make daily reports, enter information on the receiving of product, and write memos it is important that the Security Guard have computer skills. A Security Guard may need to know how to manage files and records. A Security Guard needs to know how to design forms, do transcription and perhaps do other office procedures with his functions.
A Security Guard must have full knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process. These things are imperative for a Security Guard to stay on top of the position that he has and keeping within the legal realm of his function as the Security Guard. The laws and legal codes do not normally change on a constant basis, however, agency rules might change from time to time so it is a good thing to be made aware of any changes.
