What is an NFL Referee?

An NFL Referee is a referee who officiates NFL (National Football League) games. He is an American Football official who is responsible for supervising the game in which he can enforce certain rules and regulations and announce players’ faults.

Duties of an NFL Referee

  • NFL, also known as National Football League, is one of the biggest football leagues in the world and is also one of the major professional sports league in America, together with NBA (National Basketball Association), MLB (Major League Baseball), and NHL (National Hockey League). Being qualified for an NFL referee is of great boon—of course it comes with great responsibilities also. They are responsible for strictly overseeing the game.
  • NFL referees enforce specific rules and regulations on a game. This will ensure the flow of the game to be straight, and this will help for the safety and fairness of all the football players.
  • An NFL referee must very knowledgeable about the mechanics of the game football. He must know every detail of the game and how it will flow according to the players’ actions.
  • NFL referees must announce specific penalties done by the players. He must always give signals according to the situation (eg. Touch down, safety, timeout, illegal contact, etc).

Work Condition of an NFL Referee

  • NFL referees work in and during NFL games. The work hours will vary greatly according to the duration of the games.
  • NFL referees work in their black-and-white uniform with a corresponding cap. They will be very familiar with equipments such as the whistle, bean bag, penalty flags, and the stopwatch since they will be using these frequently during a game.

Educational Requirements of an NFL Referee

General requirements to be accomplished by an applicant are the following. First, he must have gathered different experiences of refereeing football games as many as he can. Experience is the key in getting this ideal job. Second, he must be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. Third, he must be good at decision-making and must have confidence in it.

NFL referees work only during NFL games. The games are played in an outdoor field of 360 feet in length and 160 feet in width. These professional referees earn approximately from USD 25,000 to USD 70, 000 each season.
