Cement Mason Job Description

A Cement Mason job function is too smoothes and finishes surfaces of poured concrete, such as floors, walks, sidewalks, roads, or curbs using a variety of hand and power tools. The Cement Mason aligns forms for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters; patches voids; use saws to cut expansion joints.

The Tasks of a Cement Mason:

  • A Cement Mason checks the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.
  • A Cement Mason sets the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.
  • A Cement Mason job tasks spreads, levels, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • A Cement Mason must mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
  • A Cement Mason monitors how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.
  • A Cement Mason must signal truck drivers to position trucks to facilitate pouring concrete, and move chute to direct concrete on forms.
  • A Cement Mason produces rough concrete surface, using a broom.
  • A Cement Mason operates power vibrator to compact concrete.
  • A Cement Mason directs the casting of the concrete and supervises laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it.
  • A Cement Mason must mix cement, sand, and water to produce concrete, grout, or slurry, using a hoe, trowel, tamper, scraper, or concrete-mixing machine.

Cement Mason Knowledge Requirements:

  • A Cement Mason needs knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • A Cement Mason needs knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • A Cement Mason needs knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • A Cement Mason needs knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • A Cement Mason needs knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • A Cement Mason needs to be able to use mathematics in order to perform his job function.
  • A Cement Mason must be capable of giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, and asking questions as appropriate to the situation.

  • A Cement Mason must be capable of determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job. Normally they make sure that all tools and equipment have been delivered to the job site before the concrete arrives.
  • A Cement Mason is responsible and must have enough knowledge to perform routine maintenance on equipment determining when and what kind maintenance is needed and how often it needs to be done.
  • A Cement Mason must be able to talk to others to convey information and instructions effectively especially if the Cement Mason is the supervisor.

Cement Masons Abilities:

  • The Cement Mason needs the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • The Cement Mason must have the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • A Cement Mason must have the ability to keep hand and arm steady while moving the arm or while holding the arm and hand in one position. Along with that the Cement Mason needs to be able to bend, stretch, twist or reach with body, arms, and/or legs.
