A Nuclear Technician collects and test samples to monitor results of nuclear experiments and contamination of humans, facilities, and environment.
Tasks of the Nuclear Technician:
- The Nuclear Technician measures intensity and identifies type of radiation in work areas, equipment, and materials, using radiation detectors and other instruments.
The Nuclear Technician collects samples of air, water, gases and solids to determine radioactivity levels of contamination.
- The Nuclear Technician assists in setting-up equipment that automatically detects area radiation deviations and tests detection equipment to ensure accuracy.
- The Nuclear Technician calculates safe radiation exposure time for personnel, using plant contamination readings and prescribed safe levels of radiation.
- The Nuclear Technician observes projected photographs to locate particle tracks and events and compiles lists of events from particle detectors.
- The Nuclear Technician scans photographic emulsions exposed to direct radiation to compute track properties from standard formulas, using microscope with scales and protractors.
- The Nuclear Technician monitors personnel for length and intensity of exposure to radiation for health and safety purposes.
- The Nuclear Technician calibrates and maintains chemical instrumentation sensing elements and sampling system equipment, using calibrations instruments and hand tools.
- The Nuclear Technician informs supervisors to take action when individual exposures or area radiation levels approach maximum permissible limits.
- The Nuclear Technician prepares reports on contamination tests, material and equipment decontaminated, and methods used in decontamination process.
- The Nuclear Technician confers with scientist directing projects to determine significant events to watch for during test.
- The Nuclear Technician instructs personnel in radiation safety procedures and demonstrates use of protective clothing and equipment.
- The Nuclear Technician determines or recommends radioactive decontamination procedures, according to size and nature of equipment and degree of contamination.
- The Nuclear Technician weighs and mixes decontamination chemical solutions in tank and immerses objects in solution for specified time, using hoist.
- The Nuclear Technician enters data into computer to record characteristics of nuclear events and locating coordinates of particles.
- The Nuclear Technician decontaminates objects by cleaning with soap or solvents or by abrading, using wire brush, buffing wheel or sandblasting machine.
- The Nuclear Technician places radioactive waste, such as sweepings and broken sample bottles, into containers for disposal.
Knowledge needed for Nuclear Technicians:
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge and prediction abilities of physical principles, laws, and applications including air, water, material dynamics, light atomic principles, heat, electric theory, earth formations, and meteorological and related natural phenomena.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of numbers, their operations, and interrelationships including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of the composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of weaponry, public safety, and security operations, rules, regulations, precautions, preventions, and the protection of people, data and property.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques including curriculum design principles, learning theory, group and individual teaching techniques, design of individual development plans, and test design principles.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of the media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of electric circuit boards, processors, chips, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
- The Nuclear Technician must have knowledge of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to produce motion, light, power, technology, and other applications.
