The Government Eligibility Interviewer determines eligibility of persons applying to receive assistance from government programs and agency resources, such as welfare, unemployment benefits, social security, and public housing.

Job Function

The Government Eligibility Interviewer answers applicants’ questions about benefits and claim procedures. The Government Eligibility Interviewer job is to interview benefits recipients at specified intervals to certify their eligibility for continuing benefits. The Government Eligibility Interviewer interprets and explains information such as eligibility requirements, application details, payment methods, and applicants’ legal rights. The Government Eligibility Interviewer initiates procedures to grant, modify, deny, or terminate assistance, or refer applications to other agencies for assistance. The Government Eligibility Interviewer compiles, records, and evaluates personal and financial data in order to verify completeness and accuracy, and to determine eligibility status. The Government Eligibility Interviewer must interview and investigate applicants for public assistance to gather information pertinent to their applications. The Government Eligibility Interviewer checks with employers or other references to verify answers and obtain further information. The Government Eligibility Interviewer keeps records of assigned cases, and prepares required reports. The Government Eligibility Interviewer schedules benefits claimants for adjudication interviews to address questions of eligibility. The Government Eligibility Interviewer prepares applications and forms for applicants for such purposes as school enrollment, employment, and medical services.

Knowledge and Skills

The Government Eligibility Interviewer needs to be actively looking for ways to help people. The Government Eligibility Interviewer needs to be able to select and use training methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.
