Nurse Midwife Job Description

Women are very important to our society and lives. Not only do they complete men, they also contribute to the preservation of humankind. They maintain the equilibrium of the world. They give their deepest love, especially to their children. Without them, we would not be here.

Today, many women have become very conscious towards their health, especially when it comes to their maternity stages. In what way can do something to help them?

This is the sole reason why there are nurse midwives. Not only is it an in-demand lucrative job, it also provides great help not only to women, but also to men.

What is a Nurse Midwife?

A nurse midwife is one that works for the health and wellness of pregnant women and their babies. He or she is a registered advanced practice nurse who has acquired advanced training in obstetrics.

Duties of a Nurse Midwife

  • Nurse midwives are advanced practice nurse who have acquired advancement trainings from delivering babies to providing neonatal care. They are essential to our community since they ensure baby deliveries to be safe and successful and handle baby-delivering women with the utmost care and attitude.
  • A nurse midwife ensures the safety of pregnant women from their physical health, mental, and emotional health. They explain misconceptions about reproductive health issues and educate them.
  • Nurse midwives provide their assiduous assistance to women from prenatal periods up to postnatal periods.
  • Nurse midwives also conduct procedures such as Pap smears, breast exams, and pelvic exams.
  • A nurse midwife also evaluates the status conditions of the patients and the test results of the conducted test procedures as mentioned above.

Work Condition of a Nurse Midwife

  • Nurse midwives commonly work in hospitals or birthing centers. Work hours will vary greatly, as commonly nurse midwives can be “on call”, though they usually work for a variety of 8-hour shifts.
  • There will be routine of handling general medical equipments such as blood pressure monitor and obstetrics equipment such as baby scales and gestation calculator. Handling patients and talking to them are also routinely done.

Educational Requirements of a Nurse Midwife

Educational requirements to meet by an applicant are as follows. First, he or she must complete an accredited nurse-midwifery program. Second, he or she must qualify a legitimate certification exam. Becoming a registered nurse (RN) may also be needed.

Occupation and Progress of a Nurse Midwife

Most of the nurse midwives work as employees in maternity hospitals or birthing centers. Even though most of them are employees, some are working as self-employed midwives and can be very lucrative. If one wants to advance in this job, he or she can earn a doctorate degree and may do researches and also may conduct teaching at midwifery programs. He or she may also advance to become a service editor.
